*Citrus oils are high in the chemical constituent limonene. Limonene is a very volatile molecule, meaning is quickly evaporates, causing these oils to oxidize quickly (1 - 2 years). Oxidized oils are skin irritants and skin sensitizers and should not be used topically or by direct inhalation from the bottle once they’re past their 2 year shelf life or if there is less than 10% remaining in the bottle after a year and a half. Diffusing expired oils is fine as well as adding them to cleaning products. The antimicrobial action still remains, though weakened, once past their shelf life.
