Amethyst is one of the most widely recognized stones of our day and age. Mainly associated with the crown chakra, the primary metaphysical properties that Amethyst is connected to are:  Protection, Purification, & Divine Connection.

While many are familiar with the crystal itself, what’s lesser known is the folklore on how Amethyst got its name! We attribute Ancient Greek Deities and figures to be responsible for the origin.

Legend has it that God of Wine and Fertilirt Dionysus (also known as Bacchus in Roman culture), was smitten by the maiden of names Amethyste / Amethystos. Resisting his “amorous advances”, Amethyste made it known the desire to remain chaste. In a fit of rage, Dionysus set his tigers to devour her on a pilgrimage to the shrine of Goddess Artemis (Diana for Romans). In a form of Divine intervention, Artemis shielded Amethystos by transforming her into a white stone at the moment of attack. Dionysus in response poured wine from his grapes onto her as a form of offering, thus creating the shades of purple that the stone Amethyst is known for (McGill University).
